Teacher Spotlight: Eliane Codiroli

In this special series our teachers here at The Secret Space take the opportunity to tell us more about themselves and what brought them to where they are.

In this blog we introduce you to Eliane Codiroli.

How long have you been at the Secret Space and what brought you here?

I’ve been teaching at The Secret Space since it first opened nearly 15 years ago - right from day one! Nikki, who founded the project, got in touch with me at the very beginning, and I was immediately drawn to the vision. The idea of being part of a studio with such positive, charitable aims really resonated with me, and it still does today.

Tell us about your yoga journey so far. How long have you been practising? What drew you to train as a teacher?

My yoga journey began around 42 years ago when I first started practising from books as a teenager. What started as a quiet personal interest gradually became a much bigger part of my life. I went on to train as a British Wheel of Yoga teacher 22 years ago, and a few years later completed my training as an Ashtanga Mysore teacher. Teaching felt like a natural progression - something I felt genuinely passionate about sharing with others.

Where and when did you do your training?

I completed my 500-hour British Wheel of Yoga Diploma in London, followed by a year-and-a-half apprenticeship in Ashtanga in Ware. Both experiences shaped my teaching in different and valuable ways.

What does a typical class with you look like?

My classes vary, as I enjoy teaching a range of styles to suit different needs. I teach gentle yoga for those who prefer a slower, more mindful pace - whether that’s due to injury, age, or simply personal preference. I also teach a hot yoga class, which is stronger and takes place in a heated room for those who enjoy a good sweat! For more experienced students, I offer an intermediate/advanced Vinyasa class with a bit of challenge, as well as Ashtanga Mysore sessions for a more traditional, self-led practice.

How do you create a supportive, safe space for clients?

I always encourage students to practise with a sense of inner awareness - listening to their own bodies rather than pushing beyond their limits. I remind them that as teachers, we’re here to guide and support, not to dictate. I also really value getting to know my students, even just through a quick chat before or after class. That connection helps create a welcoming and supportive environment where people feel comfortable to practise in their own way.

Do you have a specific philosophy or mantra that you live by?

Yoga philosophy quietly weaves its way through all aspects of my life - it’s not just something I practise on the mat, but something I try to live by every day.

Most rewarding thing about what you do?

I simply love yoga, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see my students experience the benefits too. Watching people grow, feel better, and find their own connection to the practice brings me a lot of joy.

What does life look like for you outside of teaching?

Alongside teaching, I run a yoga teacher training course, which takes up a lot of my time. I also have three grown-up children and am a very active (and fun!) granny to three grandchildren. I’m also a carer for my youngest, who has Down syndrome, which is an important and meaningful part of my life.

Your favourite thing about the Secret Space

I love that it’s not just a yoga studio but also a charity. There’s a genuine sense of warmth, friendliness, and support here - it really feels like a community.

Tell us a fun fact about you aside from your yoga!

I’m half Swiss, and I absolutely love the snow - especially skiing whenever I get the chance!
