Therapist Spotlight: Martina Cozzi
In this special series our in-house therapists here at The Secret Space take the opportunity to tell us more about themselves and what brought them to where they are.
In this blog we introduce you to Reflexologist and Masseuse, Martina Cozzi.
How long have you been at the Secret Space and what brought you here?
I have been at The Secret Space for approximately 8 years. I live locally in Hertford and was always intrigued when I walked past on Fore Street as to what was at the end of that little alleyway. One day I walked down there and found this lovely space for yoga and therapists. As a Reflexologist that was my “lightbulb moment”, so I have been there more or less ever since.
Tell us about your career journey so far? How long have you been practising?
I have been practicing reflexology for 27 years. During a very stressful period in my life someone suggested Reflexology. I tried it and found that for that moment in time I could relax and destress - it gave me some time where I was able to ”just be”. I would come out of a session and, whilst the problems were still there, allowing that time and space for me just meant that I could deal with things in a more thoughtful way.
What are your qualifications?
I qualified as a Reflexologist at The British School of Reflexology; Facial Reflexology at the London School of Reflexology Ziggy Bergman; Indian Head Massage with Mary Atkinson Holistic Therapy.
What does a typical session with you look like?
The very first session is 75 minutes long, so we can go though the consultation form that I will have sent you to fill in before the reflexology takes place. That way we can discuss and tailor the reflexology so you can get the best out of it. There is a couch for your comfort and I will cleanse the feet and apply a small amount of oil, before applying pressure all over the feet, a bit like a massage. Your job is simply to relax and enjoy!
How long is a typical recommended course?
I would recommend initially to do about four or five one hour sessions every one to two weeks and then reassess (I do courses which include a discount). After that, once a month or every six weeks. However, having a session whenever you can is beneficial.
How do you create a supportive, safe space for clients?
I try to make people feel at ease as it can be daunting when trying something new. If there are any questions they should feel free to ask at any point.
Do you have a specific philosophy or mantra that you live by?
I was once told “by looking after yourself first you can then be a great help to others”, so I try to make sure that I have some time set aside for rest, relaxation and wellbeing by walking, reading or - of course! - some reflexology.
Tell us something surprising about what you do.
I’m always surprised at how people think that Reflexology is ticklish, or that they could never let anyone touch their feet! I once set a challenge to a friend who thought this. She tried it and now still comes to me on a regular basis!
What’s the most rewarding thing about what you do?
I love it when people just try the reflexology and are surprised at what it can do for them. It’s great to see people walk away relaxed and intrigued by their experience. It’s even better when they feel it makes a real difference and use it as part of their wellbeing toolkit.
What does life look like for you outside of work?
I have a very supportive husband and three grown up boys. I enjoy going to festivals with my friends and listening to music. I love to try new things - I recently tried going to a gym and discovered its not my thing, so hey, at least I know now! I also like to get together with family and friends in my home with some music and food.
Your favourite thing about the Secret Space
The people. You probably know this but The Secret Space is a charity and some of the people there are volunteers, so it’s great to be a part of the team. Whether it’s working with the yoga teachers, therapists or other staff and volunteers.
Tell us a fun fact about you!
I love roller skating and recently discovered an adult roller skating session at Welwyn Garden City Campus...Amazing!!
